I am being asked to "self-clear" my shipment. What does this mean?

Last updated on 25 Mar, 2026

When booking an international order with Sherpr, the service includes the collection, handling, and customs clearance for your shipment.

By default, our partner couriers will contract their own in-house Customs brokers to facilitate the process for you. At times, they may require to contract a third-party broker to clear your shipment.

However, there are also occassions wherein Customs may contact you directly to "self-clear" your shipment. This means that you, as the recipient of the shipment, can facilitate customs clearance personally.

If you do choose to self-clear a shipment, this may require you to apply for a EORI number, and visit the facility your shipment is held at. You would then be required to declare the goods shipped, and may need to provide additional paperwork to support the release of your shipment from Customs.

In rare occassions, self-clearance may be the only way for your goods to be released from Customs. To that end, it is important that any instructions provided for this procedure are correctly followed.

Self-clearance, if an option, may potentially reduce any customs related charges on your shipment.

If you find yourself being contacted by Customs to self-clear your shipment and are unsure of what steps to take, please contact our Support team immediately.

Whenever possible, it is highly recommended that a certified Customs broker facilitate the declaration on your behalf.
